Your best defense against spots and stains on carpeting and upholstery is the proper application of fabric protector. Fabric protector should be re-applied every 3rd or 4th cleaning for maximum effectiveness. Fabric protector will not prevent spots from occurring, but will enable them to be cleaned easier, thereby preventing staining of carpet and fabrics. Most household spots (except pet stains - urine, feces, etc.) can be easily removed by using a solution of 2 parts white, non-sudsy ammonia mixed with 8 parts water. First, blot up any excess fluid by pressing down on a towel over the stained area. Then spray the area thoroughly with the ammonia and water solution and blot again. Repeat until the spot is no longer noticeable. Improper spot cleaning can lead to residues being left in the carpet which will attract more dirt much faster. It is VERY important to completely rinse out all traces of soap and chemicals otherwise you are creating a bigger problem. Any spots that cannot be removed (KoolAid, mustard, oil based stains, rust, etc.) may require special treatments.
